montegut chateau rougier camares camping vert lavande

Perched on its rocky spur, proudly overlooking the Rougier de Camarès and the Dourdou Valley, Montaigut Castle has watched over the landscape for more than a thousand years. First mentioned in the 10th century, it was then nothing more than a modest watchtower — almost shy on its rock.

Over the centuries, the de Blanc family gave it elegance in the 15th century, transforming it and dressing it in new stone. Other eras followed, with further works, right up to the 17th century. And just when all seemed lost, in the 1970s, passionate volunteers from the REMPART Union rescued it from oblivion. A beautiful second life story, just the way we like them.

A visit that leaves a lasting impression

Today, Montaigut Castle is fully restored and open to everyone. As soon as you step through the entrance, you can almost feel the coolness of the medieval walls and the breath of time itself.

Room after room, you explore, climb, observe, and imagine life as it once was… and then suddenly, at the turn of a staircase: the view. Panoramic, spectacular, glowing red with the lands of the Rougier. One of those moments when you naturally slow down, just to take it all in.

Right next door, the reconstructed ecomuseum village invites you into everyday life of the 19th century: old tools, rural scenes, simple moments of the past — a truly moving journey back in time.

Activities for everyone — even those who’ve kept their childlike spirit

At Montaigut Castle, you don’t just visit: you play, you learn, you laugh.

Medieval workshops, traditional games, exhibitions, and lively events are all designed so families can enjoy a fun and welcoming experience together.

And for those dreaming of stepping back in time, costumes are available. (Yes, adults too — no judgement here.)
